After countless of great reviews for Plan B (2009), Marco Berger made his second feature Absent (2011). Different from the former romantic and humorous tone, Absent has a horror vibe to it. It is a blue story about unreleased lust. It was nominated by Berlin International Film Festival and awarded Best Feature Film at the Teddy Awards.

Student Martin claims there is something wrong with his eye, and asks his instructor, Sebastian, to take him to the doctor. Later, Martin tells him that there is no one at his home and he does not have the key to the door. Sebastian has no choice but to take him home for the night. Martin sneaks into his room to touch his boy while he is asleep. Sebastian knew that there was something fishy the whole time. He knew that Martin lied to him afterwards. When Martin confesses the truth to him, Sebastian still cannot come to terms with it. Should he cross the invisible line between teacher and student? Or can he face his true desires?

Absent (2011) is actually a beautiful accident. When the director was preparing to shoot his fourth film Mariposa (2015), the production was delayed due to lack of funds. During that time, he rewrote his short film about a boy and his cousin into a film script. Under severe time and cost constraints, he made his award-winning film. The contrast betwen the tensions at the beginning and the end of the film are a masterclass in suspense.

Originally, the instructor was planned to be a blue-eyed blond man. Yet, Carlos Echevarría directly contacted Marco and changed his mind after the audition. Even though Carlos Echevarría does not necessarily have an attention-catching appearance, his performance gave the character a down to earth and reliable personality. Moreover, his undertanding of the conflict and regret was outstanding.

Javier De Pietro was picked from an online audition with ten other participants. The director said that his appearance was what caught his eye, and his previous perfromances what made him decide. Because of Absent, he was nominated for two major film awards in Argentina. Following this project, he appeared in several shorts and in Berger's Butterfly

Even though Sebastian has a girlfriend, his sexuality remains a mystery during the whole film. During a screening in the UK, he mentioned that he wants to express how negatively straight men react when a gay man expresses his affection to them, especially Argentinan men. He wants the heterosexual men to confront his own feelings. This is a film about self-discovery and the fluidity of lust

The story begins with Shiro Kido's reunion with a former classmate, Rio Kijima, at a college teacher's funeral.

With the intense eroticism and closeness, both men open up and feed into their desire. As their lust grows so does their toxic craving. The two become a relationship beyond the line while a mixture of emotions are drawn from the suffering Kijima.
