Venezuelan gay film Blue and Not So Pink (Miguel Ferrari, 2012) was very well-received in Asia after winning the Spanish Goya Award for Best Foreign Film. The story follows a handsome father and his cute son and their difficult relationship. The story, with an undeniable Latino humor and style, feels close to real life and brings up the topic of homosexuality very naturally, making it easy to audiences to empathize with.

The main character is played by Venezuelan actor Guillermo Garcia. His character, Diego, a famous photographer, had a son when he still was very young, making him one of the cutest dads on earth. In one hilarious scene, Diego and his partner Fabrizio are dining at a fine restaurant. A married woman next to them keeps flirting with Fabrizio right in front of Diego’s presence. He then stands up, walks forward and bends down to kiss his boyfriend in public, marking his territory in front of the woman.

Diego’s son, Armando, has been his sweet burden since he knocked up his classmate back in college. As Diego moves to Madrid together with his mother, he and Armando gradually drift apart. Armando blames him for not taking care of him. When he comes to visit Diego, he sees the gay porn DVD collection on the TV stand and finally realizes that his father is gay. He is charmingly played by Spanish actor Ignacio Montes. He started his career on the TV screen back when he was only 14. At 16, he made his big screen debut and now he is already 26!

The director, Miguel Ferrari, used to be an actor too. His very first feature film Blue and Not So Pink won the “Spanish Oscar” (Goya Award) for Best Foreign Film. He moved to Spain to study almost 20 years ago and has stayed there ever since, so the award means a lot to him. He spent 4 years producing this film, and this film drew a 60,000 people audience in Venezuela to watch it. He said: “The film distributor was really surprised. But I always assumed it will arouse the audience’s sympathy. Before this film was released, people were afraid to discuss homosexuality, but this film will help people discuss it more naturally.”
