DNA Says Love You has been this year’s most year’s most anticipated new BL series ever since it released a free three-minute teaser in advance of airing. For fans, it’s been a long six-month wait from when filming began to when the show finally began to air, but now it’s finally here—the first two episodes premiered in Taiwan on iQiyi and overseas on GagaOOLala at noon on March 14, White Day.

Three childhood friends form the core of DNA Says Love You as they deal with friendship, family, and romance. The story follows five young people as they bravely pursue love. Things kick off with Amber (played by Erek Lin) returning from abroad, beginning a tale of youthful passion.

The official press conference for the show brought together members of the cast including Erek Lin, Huang Hsin Hao, Guo Yu Cheng, Matt Lee, Tannie Huang, Ye Hong Yi, and others.

“Beyond just being my first time acting in a BL show, I gave this show my first kiss with another man,” said Erek Lin at the presser. “And the very first scene on the first day of filming was a kissing scene! Also the character I play used to be a woman, so I really wanted to show up wearing a skirt today, but I was worried it would be too distracting. If you want to know why I’m a woman, all I can do is leave you in suspense for now and tell you to watch DNA Says Love You.”

He went on to say, “I thought kissing another man would be stinky, but actually it wasn’t at all. Plus Huang Hsin Hao often eats plum candy, so kissing him tasted both sweet and tart, and he’s got those soft, plump lips, so actually kissing him is a pretty good experience!”

Huang Hsin Hao—who everyone on set called the Mayor—also worked with Erek Lin on The Summer Temple Fair.

When asked if he had any tips to share about being with Erek Lin, Huang Hsin Hao said, “The biggest difference between me and my character Pu Le Jian is that I’m not as oblivious. In the story Erek often gazes adoringly at me, but somehow I never realize it—it really feels both innocent and kind of dumb. This is the second time we’ve worked together, but last time we were always split up, so we didn’t actually have that much contact with each other. This time, in order to get into character, I made myself fall in love with Erek while we were filming, so there were times when other people caught me sneakily kissing him, because sometimes looking at him I just couldn’t resist!”

As for kissing, Huang Hsin Hao said, “Erek is better at kissing, but my equipment (my lips) are better!”

DNA Says Love You marks rookie actor Lin Wei Jie’s first time appearing on TV. At present, he’s still a drama student at National Taiwan University of Arts with an extremely busy schedule, splitting his time between filming, preparing his graduation project, and taking classes.

Lin Wei Jie plays Xiao Li, a character who aggressively expresses both his love and his hate. Lin Wei Jie says, “The character I play is completely different from my own personality. I was very worried that I wouldn’t be able to do a good job with the role, but the praise I received after my screen test helped me feel more comfortable.”

Lin Wei Jie took on the challenge of a BL drama for his very first show. He frankly admitted that he was under a lot of stress during production. Because it was his first time doing a real show, there were a lot of rules about filming that he didn’t know. The director’s most frequent instruction to him was, “Don’t act with your nostrils pointing at the camera!” But after adjusting his position, Lin Wei Jie would then find himself getting yelled at for forgetting his lines.

Two years ago, Guo Yu Chen appeared in BL drama Because of You 2020, playing a more passive kind of role. This time, the most unforgettable part of filming for him was when director Hao Hsin-Hsiang scheduled a twelve-scene marathon of a day as a challenge for his own patience and endurance, as well as a trial by fire for the two rookie actors on set. Even now, Guo Yu Chen and Lin Wei Jie still have no idea how they survived that day.

The very first time Guo Yu Chen worked with Erek Lin, they had an intense kissing scene. Gun You Chen said, confidently, “Guess I’m pretty attractive! When Erek and I were kissing, he just climbed right into my lap.”

Part of the music in DNA Says Love You was created in partnership with Sony Music and its stable of talented singers. The opening song, “Bye #MyLimit,” is sung by the Huang Brothers, while the ending song is by Polin, the most recent winner of Jungle Voice.

Polin wrote “Butterfly” just for DNA Says Love You while Jungle Voice was still going on, and fans started praising it the minute it was released as part of the show’s teaser.

Describing the process of creating this song, Polin said, “I read the whole script and discussed the overall direction of the song with the production team before I started writing. To me, butterflies represent hope and transformation—they go through a complete metamorphosis and come out beautiful. The story is the same way, moving through pain and repression until it reaches the ending. It’s a long and winding road. With everything, you always have to remember the past—even when it’s sad, it’s still a beautiful story. Just like the first time I saw a butterfly as a child—it’s a wonderful thing. So it took me about a month to finish the whole song.”

The four actors were asked to prepare gifts in honor of White Day, on which people reciprocate presents received on Valentine’s Day.

Erek Lin brought a popular kind of home fragrance. He said, “Smelling a scent you like can put you in a good mood for a whole day. I want to share this scent with my other half, so we can be in a good mood together.”

Huang Hsin Hao brought a bracelet he made himself. In his words, “I hope that whenever they wear this bracelet, they’ll remember that I’m here protecting them, and I hope it’ll bring them courage and positive energy.”

Guo Yu Chen, who brought condoms as his present, was universally acclaimed as the most safety-conscious of the four. He said, “If you love someone, you should protect them and protect yourself. There’s nothing embarrassing about that.”

Lin Wei Jie brought a houseplant. He said, “Love is just like a potted plant. You have to take good care of it, or else it’ll die. I hope that when I give it to the person I love, together we can tend to it forever.”
